BEWARE! Ocean Global Network (Ocean English Club) |

Beware! It's after Midnight, and via email I've just lost my battle with the Director of Teachers at Ocean Global Network (OGN). Let me start from the beginning. The Director originally hired me under the pretense that he/she was rescuing me from one of the big English schools in Japan. In addition to my new job, the Director found me an apartment. There was no contract for the apartment. Before I knew it, I was paying outrageous rent and utility bills. The free internet and cable that I was promised didn't exist, and the Director told me there was nothing he could do for me, even though he promised me these things when I agreed to live in the apartment. And because the apartment was located only five minutes from the Head Office (OGN is a dispatch company), I was constantly asked to come to the Head Office before my shift, making me an errand boy in addition to being an ESL teacher. I'm not making this next claim to be sensational or vengeful, but the Director I spoke of previously is both unprofessional and sexually perverted. Beginning with the bold claim that he/she is sexually perverted, let me say that nearly every correspondence I had with the Director, be it one-on-one over the telephone or at a teacher’s meeting, several grotesque sexual comments were made (I will omit specific details for the sake of this post remaining clean. If you wish to learn more, my email address is below). His/Her unprofessional behavior came when I informed him/her and the company that I was leaving due to personal reasons. After being called "Irresponsible" and told to "Grow up," he/she defended his/her attacks by saying that they said what they had to for the sake of the business. After I gave a month's notice that I was leaving OGN, I was constantly harassed by the Director and made to feel guilty for my decision. I had to stop answering his/her phone calls in order to end their personal attacks against me. I returned to the US Oct 3rd. It is almost December, and I still haven’t received pay for the time I worked in September. I know this is illegal, but because I left Japan, I don't feel there is much I can do. Also, my final paycheck has a series of deductions that, though itemized and explained in detail, exploit my situation. One example is though I requested to move out of the apartment they found me on Oct 3rd, I have to pay for rent well after that date. When I asked my old boss, the Director, why, I was told "That's just the way it is." Because I never signed a contract on the apartment, I don’t know how to stop him/her from charging me whatever he/she wishes. I strongly urge people looking to teach at OGN to think again. Though it's a nice little school that can start you pretty quickly with a position that allows you a fair degree of independence, the management, specifically the Director, will attempt to exploit you any way they can. And for everyone who's thinking about accepting a job at a new school, do your research before you sign up. For more detail regarding OGN, you can email me at
